My Review -

Having a mental disorder isn't easy, and it's even harder when people around you assume that you can't get over it. Four years of despair by Jalesa Morrison is a story based on a mental illness topic. We see a girl with wings and a school bag on the cover page, which clear the picture of the girl we read in the synopsis.

Plot - The female protagonist is a black teenage girl, Jaunell Morris. Her behavior started changing when she turned thirteen and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Jaunell lives with her mother, Joan, and two older sisters Francis and Lois. Joan is a single and unemployed parent. She is financially broken and relies on her mother for help. In the meantime, Jaunell's behavior is getting worse day by day. She is hospitalized so many times but still didn't change a bit.

Characters - Joan's role portrays as a weak woman, but she cares and loves her daughters. She suffers insult and physical abuse by Jaunell. Francis and Lois hate Jaunell and her mood swings. Jaunell's behavior affects every member of the family physically or emotionally, including his father and uncle. There are doctors and social workers who played an important role. Jaunell's lack of self-esteem put her into heartbroken situations every time.

Language and Narration - The writing is communicative, but there are punctuation errors and a few spelling mistakes. The sketch is smooth and fast-paced.

One can connect with Jaunell's character. She thinks no one loves her expect her grandmother. Her journey is filled with violence and negative thoughts. Jalesa Morrison describes an eating disorder, suicidal thoughts of patients very well. I don't like the abrupt end of the story. I am hoping there will be a sequel in which I get to know the real reason behind Jaunell's behavior and did she get the real help or not. Overall, this story gives an insight into the bipolar disorder and hooks the reader from start to end. I recommend this one
