Book Review -
I have watched numerous movies directed by Steven Spielberg, and when this book came my way, I gladly agreed to read it. However, before reading this book, I have no idea about his personal life or how it influences his work.
This book is not a biography but a "pseudo introductory course," as mentioned by Michael Jolls. Nevertheless, this will give you the initial idea of what's was going on in the mind of this terrific filmmaker while directing his movies.
Steven Spielberg's parents were separated when he was 19, and for a long time, he blamed his father for abandoning the family. Naturally, this hit him hard, and in many of his films, he portrayed the characters who neglect their child.
To be honest, I never established this connection before, including many other things. If I haven't read this book, I never will be. But for me, this book cast a whole new light on Spielberg's work projects.
Michael Jolls is an admirer of Spielberg's work and a director/producer himself. The book revolves around the different eras of Spielberg's craft, including the snippets of some of his interviews too. As a result, the author gives a more profound understanding to the readers while keeping the book short and to the point.
Once you start reading it, it is hard to put it down. I admire how the author approaches Spielberg's movies' political aspects and not just the heartfelt ones. If you're a fan of Spielberg, an art or film student, this book is for you. I highly recommend this book.
