Cold Cock is Mukul Ranjan's debut book. Although the title indicates cold, the story's angle is also stony, so do the characters. Ashwin, a boy from Bhopal, came to Mumbai and started working in a regional television channel where he met Mynah, Elena, Vipul, Sartaj, Ravi, and many other characters.
Mynah and Ashwin's characters portray as the on-and-off type of couple. The whole atmosphere in the office can make any sane people go mad; the vulgar language, physical abuse, unhealthy sarcasm, unwise decisions, and whatnot are the crux of this book.
Everyone is looking for an opportunity to fuck others, whether physically or professionally; all the characters need serious therapy sessions and counseling, especially Mynah. A significant part of the book is based on Bihar; the raw reality was hard-hitting to read, but I guess that's the certitude.
Whether you're on camera or behind the scenes, surviving in the show business is challenging. However, all the characters try to endure the hard times with twisted dark humor, but their actions are entirely unacceptable.
I have many issues with the storyline and narration; they definitely can be better. In addition, the author used regional references, so it will be hard for you to understand if you only speak English.
I appreciate Mukul Ranjan's efforts to write a story different from the usual drama, but there's a long way to go. Nevertheless, if you want to explore the dark side of entertainment channels, you can read this book.
