The Cardinal War is the debut book written by Jennifer Tempest. This short fantasy fiction revolves around four noble houses and their ambitions to make their house prominent. But unfortunately, only one could win and claim the seat of Mordale, which led to the war and endless casualties.
The protagonist Eileen is an orphan and lives on the street of Mordale. Unaware of her past, she tumbled into the midst of state affairs, and there she met Daithi, a messenger and loyal to the throne. They both fell for each other the moment they met, as Daithi thought that there was something special about Eileen, and he proved right in the future.
A few people are looking for a way to stop the war, but no one knows how except Eileen. She learned the reality of her origin from a fellow troubadour; confused between what to do or not, Eileen finally found her way to a peaceful life.
The story is fast-paced and short suitable for children and young adult readers. However, the tale can be turned out in a novella if Jennifer Tempest wants. She can continue the story and make it into a series because I would love to read it, as she narrated this one beautifully. Overall, it was a fun read.
