The Immortal is a debut book written by E.G. Creel. The plot revolves around the immortal people looking for a way to become mortal again.
The protagonist Emma, who has no relatives, no close friends, or life partner, lives with two cats. She will turn forty soon and has a midlife crisis, and to deal with it, she decides to take a long due vacation on an island far away from everyone.
On the last day of her trip, she discovered that the restaurant owners were immortal Vikings. They killed the rest of the guests except Emma, who became an asset for the whole clan.
The Viking king Bjorn with his brother Ivar lived thousands of years, and they took a trip with Emma to Antarctica to find the most dangerous and vicious Viking trapped in the bottom of the ocean. Bjorn and Emma became close during this journey, which led to unforeseeable future predicaments.
The story is loaded with ancient beasts, bloodthirsty, vicious Vikings, and a strong-willed woman, but most of the time, she was treated poorly. Emma's character is portrayed as a woman who cooks, cleans, and deals with the crap of men around her.
She could have been much more than that; her true potential came out in the end, which was way too late for me as a reader to connect with her. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I think the narrative can be way solid if Emma stood for herself from the start.
The plot can turn into a series with new characters and Emma being the lead, and I hope that E.G. Creel gives this a thought, and if she did that, please unleash Emma's beast to her full power.
Overall, I recommend this fast-paced fantasy story to newbies, and if you're in a reading slump, this will help you to get out to it too.
