Book Review -
The second book in The Dark Days series, Sanctuary, is written by Christopher Cole. In the first part, Outbreak, we learn that the protagonist Sonny and his friends went to look for Fort Gold Rush, the only place they knew could provide them shelter and safety from zombies.
By facing numerous difficulties, they reached the fort and learned that the military runs the place, and they all need to follow the rules or they'll send into the wilderness. That's why when the army declares that they're going to train kids and teenagers to become soldiers so that they can protect this place in the future, everyone has to obey it.
Sonny and his friends just got there and, finding themselves in this, shook their trust in democracy. He also faces a dilemma when another family starts considering him their son; knowing the truth, he still accepts this lie and finds a family with loving parents.
This story focuses more on the bandits and how these kids fight with them. The author introduces many new characters; Grim Harvard is one of them. A vigilante turned into a military officer; his story is heartfelt. He trained Sonny to not only fight with zombies but to deal with all kinds of threats.
As stated in the blurb, he becomes a paramount influence in Sonny's life, but I felt that the author didn't do justice to these two characters. As a reader, I wanted to read more about their covert training, and it would be great to feel their bond growing. There were a few pieces here and there, but they were not enough to make the connection.
Apart from this, the novel is fast-paced and filled with action sequences to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters constantly fight for their survival and make associations along the way.
I would love to read more about Sonny and Grim, Sonny and his birth parents, and most importantly, a backdrop story of how and why the plague began, and it would be great if the next book had some crazy conspiracy twists.
Overall, I relish reading it and have high hopes for the next book. I recommend it to those who enjoy action-packed apocalyptic stories.
