The Only Way Out is Death is a debut book by Varun Gwalani. Based on the people who robbed others during the pandemic, the mastermind kidnaps twelve people and puts them in a do-or-die situation, or should I say die-and-die?
These twelve people come from different backgrounds but are interlinked in one way or another. The hotel they were held hostage in is the creation of the mastermind's malicious mind, and no one can leave without starting another pandemic, a deadlier than the previous one.
A few characters try different methods to escape but end up with electrical shocks. They were provided three ways to live the rest of their lives, leading to a killing spree. Kiriaki, a lawyer, admits her blunders in proving a theory related to the first murder. She soon starts playing the role of detective because someone has to; after all, it is about life and death.
These twelve people couldn't trust anyone, but they still made allegiance to kill and survive. The ending was exceptional, and I'm glad it was not stereotypical.
The plot progress with each slaying and how they solve it to reach the ultimate truth about each other. In between, there are dialogues related to ethics and morals, which made me realize the ideologies of the mastermind. I'm not saying that the kidnaper is a saint, but there is definitely something about the whole persona that I actually like.
The story is fast-paced and intriguing. Varun Gwalani creates a fantastic, twisted plot that has the potential to hook the readers from start to end. With an intricate storyline, this book is a perfect fit for murder mystery lovers. I recommend it.
