Homeland is Robert Keprta's debut short novella inspired by actual events. It is based on immigrant citizens; one of them is Frank, who left Hamburg in 1912 with his parents at the age of ten. To live a good life, his family went to America.
Frank's parents lack finances and face a language barrier, but the American dream and the land's opportunities attract them so much that they are ready to do all the hardships. As the story progresses, and now Frank is an adult and returning to his native land, Kunvald, he is stopped by his wife Bosinia, but the urge to see if he can find his long-lost friends and home is potent.
Soon he realized that he had made a mistake coming to the Czech Republic because he was detained and forced to serve in the military. With no access to help, he decides to flee the country, but it is not easy as he thought. He faced obstacles one after the other but didn't lose faith in God. But will he be able to meet his family or die searching for his homeland?
The story is not only about his toils but also conveys confidence, devotion, and faithfulness in doing good and believing that all will be good. The narration seems abrupt sometimes, but overall, it is a pleasant and fulfilling read. One can efficiently finish this fast-paced story in one go. I recommend it.
