Sri Devi Mahatmyam for Kids: Glories of the Feminine God in Hinduism by Ishwar Joshi Awalgaonkar

Book Review -

Ishwar Joshi Awalgaonkar's third book is for kids. Still, I think it is for every reader who is interested in Hinduism or wants to learn about Devi (Goddess) and her nine different forms. And what is a better time to read this book, if not during the Navratri festival?

We're celebrating Navratri in India - a festival of nine days where we pray to Goddess Durga as she fought demons to restore peace and Dharma in Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld.

It also signifies women's empowerment. The Devi has different names and forms, but she is considered the Adi Shakti, the original creator of the Universe in Hindu texts. Devi Mahatmyam is a part of the holy book Markandeya Purana

The book offers information about Devi's origin, how she annihilates evil periodically, and how anyone can seek her blessings. It is divided into short sections, so you can read this book to your kids at once or pick a chapter of your choice as well.

I read Ishwar Joshi's previous work, Sri Sai Sat Charitra for Kids and Nectar of All World Religion, and just like his first book, he provides a set of questions related to the content you read in this book too. It is great because you can quiz your children, making them remember things effortlessly. But, the best part is the author also provides the answers in the end.

While reading this book, I realized that Devi was treated poorly by the demon Kings and their ministers just because she was a woman and there was no place for her on the battlefield. Even the boon the monsters asked was to save them from men; they didn't even think about women being courageous or strong enough to kill them.

Many men still treat women like that, consider us beneath them and helpless. Obviously, times are changing, but we must teach the next generation that women are the creators and should be equally respected.

A book like this one will be an excellent beginning for you to discuss this topic and teach your children about a spirited, fearless, and robust female figure. In addition, they will learn about Navratri and comprehend Hindu ideology too. So, I highly recommend this book.
