The Empty-Handed Altruist is a story about a young boy Manas, living in a chawl; his life is as difficult as one can imagine. His mother gave birth to a boy, Manas's younger brother Manan; she felt sick after that due to lack of care.
Their father is a drunkard, and all of these forces Manas to sell roses and toys on the street. But he wants the best life for his brother and is ready to do all the hard work; Manan started going to school, then college.
But Manas also realized the importance of education and started learning; his journey was way more complicated than Manan's. Still, with his determination and grit, he achieved what seems like a dream for so many others. The story portrays unconditional brotherly love, which leads to selflessness and a desire to aid the people like him.
The story is fast-paced, short, and told from Manas's POV. However, the language is easily understandable, and Dr. Jyuthica K. Laghate beautifully narrates the complexities of one's life. I also have a younger sibling, so I understand Manas's adoration, care, and protectiveness towards Manan.
I also appreciate the teacher's role in this story; they have the power to make or break children's futures. In this one, they create a thriving path for both brothers by providing genuine supervision. Overall, it is likable; you can finish reading it in an hour or two. If you're in a slump, it will help you to get out of it too. I recommend it.
