Arunima's (penname) recently released The White Maze, a story based in a small town where drug trafficking is as normal as breathing. The story starts with a calm and composed sea yet treacherous, as she begins to throw the bodies on the shore instead of consuming them.
Each character in this book is a protagonist, so let's start with Dr. Sagar, who realizes something is fishy when he has to do the autopsy of a recent body obtained by the police, which puts his life in danger. While on the run, he took help from a reporter and a prostitute; both have their agenda to fulfill.
This unlikely trio tries to put together the missing pieces, while in the town, a newlywed couple becomes the new target for the drug lord. The corrupt police, frightened mules, camouflage nobles, and astray youths are part of this story. Apart from Sagar, other characters like Ratan, Shanti, and Nargis; all have their backstory, making the novel engaging.
The best part of this book is that all the female characters are portrayed as strong and capable of defending themselves; some are skilled enough to kill as well. I appreciated the twists and turns; the fast-paced narration made it more enjoyable to read.
The story showed the greedy human nature that will turn a sane person into a monster and how all of it affects underprivileged people. However, I felt that the ending could have been better. I won't comment further, as it will spoil the climax for you. A lot of blood was spilled and a lot will if the main villain will not be caught.
Although the tale is hooking, as it progresses characters' relationships and secrets are revealed, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. Overall, it is a well-written and engaging novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy a combination of suspense and action. I definitely recommend it and look forward to reading more of Arunima's work in the future.
