Powerless is the first book in the trilogy written by Lauren Roberts. This YA fantasy novel revolves around Elites with superpowers and people without special abilities, known as Ordinaries. They were forced to leave the kingdom of Ilya on the pretext of weakening the Elites.
The protagonist, Paedyn Gray, is an Ordinary posed as a mundane (someone with a low level of power) to save her life, but she is more than that. She is a thief and a fighter, with a heart filled with hatred for the King of Ilya. On the other hand, Kai Azer is a ruthless killer created by his own father.
They cross each other on a busy street in the kingdom, changing their lives forever. Soon, Gray finds that the person she saved is the prince, and now she has to participate in the Trials, another crooked method of the King.
Only the fittest can survive here, and Gray, posing as mundane, has no chance or choice. She solely relies on the training given by her late father.
Soon, she meets other candidates and realizes they all are here to win by hook or crook. Prince Kai and Kitt both fancy Gray, but she has feelings for one brother while toying with another to get what she wants: revenge.
The chemistry between Kai and Gray is to die for; I enjoyed every bit of the slow-burn fling, quarrels, and banter.
The trials will remind you of the Hunger Games series. Apart from that, I enjoyed the story so much, and I can't wait to read the next book, Reckless. Without spoiling things for you, if you are into romance fantasy, pick this book.
The conversation will make you blush, and the anticipation will kill you, not literally, LOL, but you know what I mean, right? So, just go and grab this book now.
Never ever read a Romance Fantacy....But this sounds like fun
