Salute the Souls by Dr. Kumar R. Bhushan and Arya Bhushan

Book Review -

A soldier on the verge of death is like a fading star, its brilliant light dimming, but its legacy still shining in the night sky.

I recently finished reading Salute the Souls: A Story of Communal Harmony and Patriotism by Dr. Kumar R. Bhushan and Arya Bhushan, a profound story, that intertwines themes of love, sacrifice, and communal harmony against a backdrop of patriotism and deep societal issues. It's an emotional journey, rich with personal and collective struggles, and it is a story that truly speaks to the heart.

One of the strongest elements of the book is its character development. The central characters, especially Tejas and Masterji, are beautifully portrayed, with their values and actions deeply resonating with the themes of unity and compassion.

The story unfolds in such a way that you can’t help but feel connected to their emotional journeys. Tejas, in particular, stands out with his complex evolution from a boy in search of his roots to a man dedicated to his country and its people. His love story with Sanam is filled with hurdles, which makes it feel realistic, even though it sometimes leans on drama.

The narrative weaves multiple stories and layers, which add richness to the plot. Masterji's life of selfless dedication, his efforts to challenge societal prejudices, and Tejas's drive to join the Indian Army all contribute to a compelling and engaging storyline.

The communal tensions and religious strife depicted in the novel serve as a powerful commentary on the fractured nature of society, while the effort to bring about peace and unity is truly inspiring.

However, what detracted from my experience was the chapter titles. They were far too revealing, giving away key plot points before the story had a chance to build any suspense. This spoiled my intrigue, as I found myself already aware of what was going to happen before I even began reading the chapters. I wish the chapter titles had been more subtle or abstract to preserve the tension and excitement.

Despite this, the story remains impactful, particularly in its portrayal of communal harmony and patriotism. The book delves deep into the complexities of these themes, presenting them in a way that feels personal and real. The communal clashes and societal conflicts in the story reflect real-world tensions, but the authors manage to offer a hopeful message that love and unity can prevail.

The political undertones and discussions about cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir are also handled with a level of nuance, making the narrative more gripping.

JK’s (Tejas' friend) infiltration into a terrorist camp and the rescue mission add a layer of action and suspense that keeps the reader engaged. This combination of action, emotional depth, and political context makes for a dynamic and multifaceted story.

In conclusion, it is an emotionally charged and thought-provoking read that explores important societal issues through a mix of love, patriotism, and personal sacrifice and I would recommend it to anyone interested in stories of inter-religious love story, societal challenges, and national duty.
