The Journey of Love by Simi Ramdutt is part of the Hexagons series but can be read as a standalone. The series revolves around six individuals who are unknowingly connected by an unconventional brotherhood. This instalment follows James, one of the Hexagons, as he navigates an unexpected arranged marriage.
James, a Duke living a privileged life, is admired by women across England. However, his carefree existence is upended when his father arranges his marriage to an Indian princess, Lizzy.
Initially, James is determined to break off the engagement, but his perspective shifts once he meets Lizzy. However, rather than a deep emotional connection, his interest seems to stem more from the thrill of the chase—Lizzy challenges and defies him in ways no one else does.
Lizzy, raised by maids, is strong-willed and believes in equality within marriage—an idea far ahead of her time. She is captivated by James' charm and looks, and their relationship is fueled by mutual attraction.
The story progresses as they travel to England and settle into married life. While they do fall in love, the journey to that point is something readers will have to discover for themselves.
The novel leans heavily into drama rather than character development or intrigue. While James undergoes a visible transformation, Lizzy's character arc remains underdeveloped. The abrupt disappearance of Lady Mary from the narrative is another weak point, especially considering Lizzy’s dismissive attitude toward her.
Despite her early claims of independence, Lizzy becomes utterly consumed by her relationship with James, overshadowing her initial ideals of financial and personal autonomy.
The book also provides subtle hints about the broader Hexagons series, teasing the identities and stories of the other members. James and Lizzy’s tale concludes with a sweet ending, but I would have loved to see Lizzy grow into her own person rather than remain in James' shadow.
Overall, The Journey of Love is an engaging read for those who enjoy historical romance with a dramatic flair, but it falls short of delivering meaningful character growth and cultural depth.
One notable issue is the lack of significant Asian representation, which is disappointing given that this book has been recognized in the Writing the Future We Need: Asian Representation by an Asian Author category. As a judge for the Indie Ink Awards 2025, I expected a stronger cultural presence within the story.
