Time-Marked Warlock is the first book in the Chronos Chronicles series by Shami Stovall. This urban fantasy novel follows the murder of a witch and how her daughter, Bree Blackstone, seeks help from Adair Finch—a warlock-turned-private investigator—to track down her mother's killer.
Adair Finch is one of the most renowned warlocks, gifted with the ability to manipulate time. However, due to his troubled past, he has abandoned his work—until twelve-year-old Bree, a half-witch, half-warlock, compels him to take on the case.
With the aid of a spirit Kull, the trio embarks on a mission to uncover the truth while also searching for Bree’s father, Liam. Solving a case that involves humans, witches, and warlocks is no easy feat, especially with Finch’s notorious reputation.
As the story progresses, readers witness Finch’s evolving dynamic with Bree. Their journey is filled with obstacles, mysteries, and unexpected twists that keep the suspense alive. The novel is action-packed, features relatable characters, and is written in an engaging, immersive style.
Readers will find themselves rooting for Finch and Bree to solve the case and find their happily ever after—but success often comes at a cost. What price do they pay to crack the case in record time? You will have to read the book to find out.
As the first installment in the series, this book lays a strong foundation, and I am eager to see how Finch and Bree’s relationship develops, particularly as Finch continues his pursuit of the culprits behind his brother’s brutal murder. The story had me hooked from the very beginning, and I look forward to the next books in the series.
That said, the concept of reliving the same day repeatedly is not entirely new—I have seen a similar premise in Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. While it did not feel groundbreaking, the execution was well done, making the book a compelling read nonetheless. I highly recommend it to all urban fantasy lovers.
