Dark Blade by Steve Feasey

Book Review -

Dark Blade, the first book in Steve Feasey's Whispers of the Gods series, marks my introduction to the author—and what a compelling start it was! From the very first chapter, the author crafts a gripping young adult fantasy tale that pulls readers into a world brimming with ancient prophecies, dark deities, and reluctant heroes.

At the heart of the story is Lann, a teenage boy raised on a quiet farm by seemingly ordinary parents—until he learns, just before his fourteenth birthday, that not only is he adopted, but a powerful prophecy surrounds him. Warned by a witch, Lann must leave his home to escape forces that are hunting him for reasons he does not yet understand.

As Lann navigates a world he never knew existed, he finds himself making a dangerous pact with an Old God, unknowingly binding himself to a cursed weapon—the Dreadblade. This sword not only enhances his ability to fight monsters but also sets him on a dark and brutal path.

Along the way, Lann is joined by two dynamic allies: Fleya, a mysterious witch sworn to protect him, and Astrid, a fierce warrior princess with a personal vendetta that only Lann can help her fulfil.

Steve Feasey’s writing stands out with its fast-paced narrative, vivid descriptions of magical landscapes, and an engaging blend of mythology and action. The novel explores deep themes of destiny, identity, and the seductive nature of power. While some fantasy elements may feel familiar, they are executed with enough originality and energy to keep the reader thoroughly entertained.

What truly impressed me was the realistic pacing of the character development. Lann's transformation from a sheltered farm boy to a hardened monster-slayer feels authentic and emotionally resonant. His growth is neither rushed nor drawn out, and the supporting characters are just as layered and believable.

I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel, Dark Art, where Lann is set to confront the mastermind orchestrating the return of the dark lord. If you are craving a fantasy read that mixes dark magic, prophecies, and powerful character arcs, Dark Blade is a fantastic weekend escape.
